Linen: a virtuous fiber, synonymous with well-being

A millennial plant with multiple uses
Linen is considered one of the oldest utilitarian plants in the world, alongside bamboo, its Asian equivalent. The first traces of its use date back to 8,000 BC. Originally from High Asia, it was introduced to Europe via Egypt, where linen fabric was beautifully nicknamed "woven moonlight" in homage to its singular beauty. The extreme strength of the linen fiber, the dazzling color of bleached linen, and the thermoregulatory properties of woven linen quickly made it an essential material in Egyptian society. Clothing the living, wrapping the dead (mummy bandages were made of linen fabric, with approximately 1km of fabric needed for an adult mummy), linen fiber was also part of the cult garments of priests. The cultivation of linen was so important in Egyptian society that its various stages, from harvest to textile processing, were considered a ceremonial activity in itself.
Indeed, this plant, synonymous with purity, has always been valued by humans, undoubtedly also for its astonishing yield: exploitable from head to toe, it is akin to a "zero-waste" plant. Each of its parts, from root to flower seeds, can be used: the stem is used for spinning, cordage, and weaving, and linseed oil is used in fields as varied as food, cosmetics, paint, or varnish. It's simple, when it comes to linen, nothing is wasted!
...Ecologically virtuous and local!
Although it represents only 1% of global textile production, 55% of linen production is now carried out in France, in Normandy, where the ancestral expertise of flax growers allows for the production of high-quality linen fiber, renowned worldwide. But its advantages don't stop there: requiring neither irrigation nor mass chemical fertilizers, linen is also a plant that effectively retains greenhouse gases. Although fragile and delicate (the flax flower blooms for only a few days and only in the morning), linen offers a landscape of gentle poetry with its blue waves unfurling in the fields like a peaceful swell. A true breath of fresh air.
From blue fields to cozy interiors
While not everyone has the chance to witness this ephemeral spectacle in the heart of the Norman countryside, many of us have already experienced the extreme comfort and softness of woven linen, whether in our clothes or our homes.
In decor, its resistant fibers, rustic appearance, and ecru hue bring a touch of authenticity and naturalness that is very soothing. Widely used in bohemian chic interiors, linen fabric also evokes the comforting atmosphere of family homes. Often positioned at the heart of fresh-floral perfumes (like Pur Lin) or floral-musky perfumes (like Fraîcheur de Lin), linen can also appear in more original compositions like aromatic fragrances (e.g., Lin & petit grain).
